Why do screw air compressors need oil?
Screw air compressors in general need quite a lot of oil in their rotor housing. The oil is combined with air during the compression phase, and it is removed from the compressed air later in the process. The screw compressor oil fulfills several important roles:
- Lubrication: The oil lubricates multiple moving parts of the compressor. Lubrication minimizes friction in the moving parts which helps to prevent the failure of the parts.
- Cooling: Air compressor oil cools down the temperature of different parts of the compressor by absorbing the heat during the compression process.
- Equipment Protection: You need oil to provide a thin protective barrier to protect your machine from rust and corrosion. This will help prevent early wear on your machine parts to prevent breakdowns before it’s time for your next service.
- Sealant: A seal is created between rotors to trap air.
What types of screw compressor oil are there?
At Edmac Europe, we sell 5 different types of screw compressor oil:
- Mineral
- Synthetic
- Polyglycol Based
- Foodgrade
- Oil free
The difference between mineral and synthethic compressor oil:
A synthetic oil has 4 to 12 times the life expectancy of a mineral oil. They run cleaner and cooler than mineral oils, which explains why they are much more expensive. Don’t forget that even though synthetic oil extends your service intervals versus mineral oil, you still have to replace your oil filter, air filter and separator element at the recommended intervals for your machine.
Screw compressor coolant:
Our compressor coolant is polyglycol based and has a life expectancy similar to the synthetic oil blends.
Our most popular OEM coolant is the Ingersoll Rand ultra coolant with a lifetime of 8000 service hours or every 2 years. Our Edmac equivalent is fully compatible to the Ingersoll Rand compressor coolant, meaning you don’t have to flush your system for top-ups. You can simply add our Torque Excellent Coolant to your machine and enjoy our top quality product at a very reasonable price.
As an added bonus, our Edmac compressor coolant is biodegradable! Your compressor condensate can be discharged to waste water treatment plants with biological treatment systems, without needing any pre-treatment.
